Pat Summitt will be remembered by most as one of the greatest coaches of all time in any sport, but she also has done as much as any individual to bring respect for women’s sports in general. Her Tennessee teams set a high bar for excellence and she grew the popularity of the game immensely. Her success forced athletic departments around the country to re-evaluate their true commitment to women athletes.

I found Coach Summitt to be one of the most inclusive coaches I have ever been around. In going to scout Tennessee players, Pat always made me feel welcome around her program, from personally introducing me to her players and staff, to inviting me to sit in on their film sessions or team meetings. She was so comfortable with who she was as a person and a coach.

The other thing that always struck me about her as a coach was how inquisitive she still was about the game, especially considering that she was at the very top of the profession. She was willing to share ideas, while at the same time constantly quizzing others, seeking fresh ideas and views about the game and the personal interactions within it. While to many on the outside she had a very serious persona, in person she was engaging, funny and warm. I loved our conversations about the game and life. That is what I have missed the most the past couple years and will miss with her gone.”

Today we mourn the passing of one of the most influential basketball coaches the game has known. Pat Summit was the ultimate competitor and consummate teacher of the game of basketball.
Through her decade-long dedication and commitment to the sport, she has left an incomparable legacy.

At the University of Tennessee, Coach Summitt established the Lady Vols as a model program, and in the process helped to elevate the sport of women’s basketball into nationwide visibility and prominence.

Coaches, players and fans everywhere are saddened by the loss one of the true giants of women’s sports.
