DISTRICT OF CHANGE - AN UPDATE ON HOW THE MYSTICS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE DMV
July 2022
In the District of Change we strive to be a force for impactful change on all fronts because we understand the subjects that have our city in a divide. Each month, we aim to bring the community together in new ways through representation and supporting everyone’s voice, and here is where you will get all our updates.
Japanese Heritage Game
It has always been important for the Mystics to celebrate and educate about different cultures, and with the addition of Rui Machida, we are exploring and learning about Japan with our friends from the Embassy of Japan. Come out and celebrate Japanese Heritage Day with the Washington Mystics on Sunday, July 17, 2022 @ 3 p.m. as we take on the Minnesota Lynx.
Fans will have the opportunity to take photos with the actual Olympic Torch from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games and hear music from Japanese Taiko Drums during halftime. Japanese will be celebrated and explored during this fun filled day and fans can grab Rui merch throughout the game in our Mystics team store locations on the concourse. Be one of the first to purchase your exclusive single ticket package, which will include a Japanese Heritage Night Mystics t-shirt for this game, here.
Mystics Mentor Program
This season we are exposing our fans to different Mentor groups under our new Mystics Mentor Program. This inaugural program works to match-up Mystics fans with 9 different local mentoring partners in need of mentors and role models. Throughout the season these different Mentor groups will have displays in the concourse area to explain more about their mission and allow you to meet some of the professionals who work to make these groups successful. These mentor groups work with children in our community to set examples and give guidance by making connections. The Mystics are focused on bringing positive role models to children in our community and the Mystics Mentor Program is here to do just that.
If you think you have what it takes to be a mentor or know someone looking for a mentor, you can find out more information about our Mystics Mentor Program and the 9 local Mentoring partners by clicking here.
Assist DC
There is still time to make the ultimate assist! The Mystics Assist DC Program is partnering with College Track Ward 8 to create paths for students in Ward 8 to get into college. With the success of last season, we have brought the Mystics Assist DC Program back to help more students across Ward 8. For every assist made by a Mystics player this season, a monetary contribution will be donated to College Track Ward 8 as we strive to hit our goal of $20,000 raised.
You don’t have to be a Mystics player to make a difference. Check on the team’s progress throughout the season with our assist meter on the Mystics website and get in on the action by donating to help these students excel in their educational journey by visiting our Mystics Assist DC page.

National Black Business Month
The Mystics continue to support Black Owned Businesses, especially in the DMV. The team strives to shine a light on businesses ran by people in our own communities. As a supporter, you do not always have to purchase items or services. Some other ways to support a Black Owned Business are to repost their content, share their business’s information, follow them on social media, recommend them to other, and visit their shops. Supporting Black Businesses is supporting our community and the Mystics continue to push others to do the same in their communities.
