Battle for the Commissioner's Cup
One of the most exciting parts of the first half of the WNBA season is the Commissioner’s Cup. The in-season tournament challenges teams to play each other within the Eastern or Western conferences and build their Commissioner’s Cup records.
The final stage is set, and the Commissioner’s Cup Championship will be played tonight at 9:00 pm ET at Michelob ULTRA Arena. The New York Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces will go head-to-head to see who wins this season’s Commissioner’s Cup. The Liberty had the best Commissioner’s Cup record in the East at 7-3, while the Aces secured the Western spot with their 9-1 Commissioner’s Cup record.
The two teams have only met twice so far this season, and each has secured a win over the other. Their first meeting was on June 29th, when the Liberty went to Vegas and lost. The Aces had all five of their starters (at the time) score in double digits. Their presence on the offensive end of the floor really shined through, as the Aces scored 98 total points.
In their second meeting, the teams were in Brooklyn and the Liberty took advantage. Jonquel Jones of the Liberty controlled the glass by securing 14 rebounds, 9 of them being defensive. The Liberty performed on offensive with 99 total points, one of their highest total scores of the season. The final score was 99-61, making this the largest loss of the season for the Aces. With only 3 losses this season, the Aces are likely to put on a show tonight for their next meeting with the Liberty.
Throughout the Commissioner’s Cup, the teams have been playing for different organizations that resonate with and support causes that they care about. With their wins in the Commissioner’s Cup competition, the Liberty have been raising money for Callen-Lorde; this organization is the global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare. And the Aces are raising funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness – Southern Nevada.
