The 2019 WNBA Champion Washington Mystics announced today that the team will hold a championship parade in the Spring of 2020 to honor the first championship in team history. The team will partner with Mayor Muriel Bowser to host the parade and surrounding events that will cap the celebration of the team’s championship run.
“Our Washington Mystics ran it back and brought it home! Each and every game this year, we witnessed a team of world-class athletes make history here in the Sports Capital of the World,” said Mayor Bowser. “Closing out this first season at the Entertainment and Sports Arena with a championship – that is the ending to this record-setting season that the team, the fans, and Ward 8 deserved. Together, let’s make it a DC tradition to start our seasons with parades and banners in the rafters.”
The Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun 89-78 last night in Game Five of the WNBA Finals, with Emma Meesseman taking home Finals MVP honors.
“We really wanted to show the proper appreciation and recognition to our players for all of their hard work and our fans for their dedication throughout the season,” said Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault. “Many of our players have commitments to play internationally and some, including Emma, will have to leave town as early as tomorrow. Today is an exciting and historic day for the Mystics family and we wanted to celebrate as a team with our fans prior to everyone heading in different directions for the offseason.”
The Mystics tipped off the celebration of their 2019 WNBA Championship at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Congress Heights earlier today. Fans heard from Coach Thibault and the players and had the opportunity to take photos with the championship trophy.
“We would like to thank Mayor Bowser and her staff for their ongoing support of the Mystics as proud residents of Ward Eight,” said Chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment Ted Leonsis. “Her flexibility on hosting us as we properly continue our celebration into the start of next season is a great example of her leadership and loyalty.”
