WASHINGTON MYSTICS SIGN BRITTNEY SYKES

Team Adds Three-Time WNBA All-Defensive Guard

The Washington Mystics announced today that they have signed three-time WNBA All-Defensive guard Brittney Sykes to a three-year contract.

“Brittney was a main target for us in free agency. She brings a skill set to our backcourt that perfectly complements our other perimeter players,” said General Manager Mike Thibault. “Her speed in transition, ability to get to the basket or find open teammates, will allow us to accelerate our offensive pace and flow.”

Thibault continued, “She can play offense and defense at three positions, and as one of the premier defensive guards in the league, she will help us continue to excel as one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA. Brittney is an exciting addition to the Washington Mystics. Welcome to D.C., ‘Slim!’”

Sykes (5-9, 154) joins the Mystics after earning WNBA All-Defensive First Team honors (2021) and All-Defensive Second team honors (2020, 2022) over the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks. During the 2022 season, the six-year veteran recorded the most steals (65) and blocks (22) of her career, while averaging 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 32 games (24 starts). She led the WNBA in steals in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Sykes has appeared in 182 career games (115 starts) with Los Angeles (2020-2022) and Atlanta (2017-2019), recording averages of 11.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 25.9 minutes per game.

The Newark, NJ native was originally drafted seventh overall by the Atlanta Dream in 2017 from Syracuse University, earning All-Rookie honors.
