The Mystics will learn where they’ll be picking in the first round of the 2025 WNBA Draft this Sunday, as the annual WNBA Draft Lottery presented by State Farm® is set to take place. The 30-minute special will broadcast exclusively on ESPN at 5 pm ET.

Lottery odds are determined by teams’ two most recent (2023 and 2024) cumulative season records. Washington holds the fourth best odds of landing the number one overall selection in the draft, with a 10.4% chance. Odds for the top pick are listed below for the other teams participating in this year’s lottery:

  • Los Angeles Sparks: 44.2% (25-55)
  • Dallas Wings: 22.7% (31-49)
  • Chicago Sky: 22.7% (31-49)

How the Lottery Works

Fourteen lottery balls will be numbered off and placed in the lottery machine to be picked at random to determine a four-digit combination. The franchise with that numerical combination then receives the No. 1 pick in the 2025 Draft. The same routine will occur for the No. 2 slot. For those not selected, the team with the next lowest two-year cumulative record will then pick third, and the remaining team will select fourth.

The incoming expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries, will not have a lottery selection, but will pick fifth in the first round and in each of the following rounds. Aside from Washington’s opportunity to collect one of the top four draft-eligible prospects coming out in 2025, they will also select at the sixth pick in the first round (from the Atlanta Dream) due to a previous transaction. The remaining selections in the first, second and third rounds of the draft will be determined by an inverse order of the team’s 2024 standings.

Following the conclusion of the Lottery, the league will conduct the Golden State Expansion Draft as the Valkyries begin assembling their inaugural roster on Friday, December 6, airing on ESPN.
