Game Recap: Sonia Citron Records Double-Double in Dallas
The Washington Mystics came up short on the road Saturday night, falling 79-71 to the Dallas Wings despite a standout performance from rookie Sonia Citron.
After trailing by as many as 24 points in the first half and heading into the break down 45-31, the Mystics came out strong in the third quarter with a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to just two.
Despite the surge, the Wings held off the comeback and maintained control down the stretch to secure the win and put an end to the Mystics' three-game win streak.
Citron led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, registering her second double-double of the season. She becomes just the second rookie in Mystics franchise history to post multiple games with 20+ points and 10+ rebounds, joining Hall of Famer Chamique Holdsclaw. Citron remains the only rookie in the league this season to accomplish that feat more than once.
With three 20+ point performances in her last four games, Citron is the first Mystic to reach that mark since Alana Beard in 2004. Her three games of 20+ points are also the second most among WNBA rookies this year. The Notre Dame product added two steals, pushing her streak to nine straight games with at least one steal, tied for the sixth-longest such streak by a Mystics rookie in franchise history.
Shakira Austin added 18 points for Washington, her fifth straight game scoring in double figures, the third-longest streak of her career.
Sug Sutton chipped in 12 points on 62.5% shooting, including two three-pointers, extending her career-best streak of games with multiple made threes. The guard has now scored in double digits in four consecutive contests, tying a career high.
Brittney Sykes returned to the lineup and dished out a team-high five assists, her eighth game this season with five or more helpers.
Defensively, the Mystics held Dallas to just four made three-pointers and forced 22 turnovers, converting those into 27 points. Washington outscored the Wings 27-16 in points off turnovers.
With Citron’s double-double, Washington’s rookies have now recorded seven such performances this season, setting a new franchise record for most rookie double-doubles in a single year (previous: six in 1999).
Washington will conclude its three-game road stretch on Thursday night against the Minnesota Lynx, whom the Mystics defeated in their last matchup 68-64. The tip-off for Thursday night is at 8 PM ET.
