Game Recap: Mystics close out Commissioner's Cup with win over Sky
The Washington Mystics closed out their 2025 Commissioner’s Cup run on a high note, taking down the Chicago Sky 79-72 on Tuesday night from Wintrust Arena, thanks in large part to a huge performance from Brittney Sykes.
After trailing 44-32 at the break, the Mystics caught fire in the third. A 15-2 run midway through the quarter flipped the momentum, and a deep three from Sykes gave them their first lead since the opening frame.
It was all tied at 56 heading into the fourth, and the two teams traded buckets down the stretch. Chicago cut it to one twice, including in the final three minutes when Kamilla Cardoso completed a three-point play to make it 71-70. But Washington responded with an 8-2 run in the final two minutes, that saw a big put back shot, following a Sykes miss, from Kiki Iriafen that helped them close it out.
Sykes finished with a season-high 32 points, 20 of those coming in the second half, and knocked down 4-of-5 from deep. She also tallied five assists and three steals. It marked her first 30+ point, 5+ assist game since last August (also against Chicago) and just the seventh such performance in the league this season.
Sonia Citron continued her strong rookie campaign with 13 points and a career-best nine rebounds, plus three steals. She’s now posted multiple steals in three straight games, the first Mystics rookie to do that since Ariel Atkins in 2018.
Shakira Austin made her first start of the season and stuffed the stat sheet recording nine points, nine boards, four blocks, two steals, and two assists. Austin became just one of four players this season to put up at least five rebounds, four blocks, and two steals in a game.
Off the bench, Sug Sutton added seven points and a season-high six assists, hitting two of her three attempts from long range. Sutton recorded her first 5+ point, 5+ assist game of the season.
On defense, the Mystics were flying around all night. They racked up a season-high 14 steals, forced 25 Chicago turnovers, and cashed in those takeaways for 40 points, a new franchise record and the fourth-most ever scored off turnovers in a WNBA game.
Washington also tied season highs in blocks (5) and offensive rebounds (12), and held their edge from three-point range (46.7% to Chicago’s 30%). The team also notched 20 fast break points for the third time this season.
The Mystics improved to 5-7 on the year following the win. Up next will be a trip to Atlanta to face the Dream on Friday night.
