The Women Behind the Mystics
If you didn’t know, the Washington Mystics are setting a standard not only on the court, but off it as well. This season, the Mystics have women at the helm of their broadcasting and gameday entertainment. From sideline reporters to in-game broadcasters and PA announcers, women are leading the charge in bringing you Mystics games all year.
Ariana Freeman
Our sideline reporter is in her first season with the Mystics, but she is not new to the game of basketball. Ariana is a former college basketball player and even helped get her team to the Sweet Sixteen. The University of Colorado graduate was a news reporter for the Buffalos during her time there as well. Ariana has been on the sideline all season long and continued to ask hard-hitting questions to our players. She gets all the information before the game and right when the last buzzer sounds. You can also catch her on Monumental Sports Network providing some halftime analysis during away games.
Christy Winter-Scott
If you have been around the DMV basketball world for a while, then you know Christy Winters-Scott. She is a DMV legend and took her basketball talents to the University of Maryland from 1986-1990, where she won an ACC Championship and helped lead her team to its third Final Four in 1989. She has coached at the high school and college level too, and her basketball knowledge is extensive. With experience in color commentating for Comcast Sports, Fox Sports, and Raycom, she built her career as one of the core color commentators for DMV basketball.
Meghan McPeak
On the broadcast of Mystics games, you can find Meghan McPeak at the scorer’s table giving fans the play-by-play for every Mystics game. McPeak got her start after playing college basketball for Humber College in Toronto, Canada. Meghan went on to become the first female play-by-play broadcaster in the National Basketball League of Canada. McPeak did not stop there, taking her talents to the NBA G-League and become the league’s first female play-by-play broadcaster. In 2019, she joined the WNBA family and announced the play-by-play for the Washington Mystics. When the Mystics travel to different cities, McPeak is still working to get fans all the latest breakdowns by featuring on the Mystics Pregame show and working alongside Christy Winters-Scott to cover the game on Monumental Sports Network.
Joey Schaljo
Joey is undergoing her first season with the Mystics as the in-game PA Announcer. After moving to New York and getting her MFA in Acting, she took a strong interest in the world of voiceovers. Schaljo has done voiceover work for commercials, training videos and live television, and her storytelling ability brings a unique approach to her announcing at the Mystics games. If you are ever wondering about the voice, you hear giving you announcements during the game, now you know who it is!
DJ Heat
When you come to the Entertainment and Sports Arena, one thing that always sets the vibe is the music. DJ Heat is our Resident DJ for the Washington Mystics, and she is responsible for all the fun tunes and sounds throughout the home games. DJ Heat joined the Mystics family as a ball girl and eventually became our DJ. She has been mixing beats and setting the gameday energy for the Mystics for seven seasons.
The Mystics broadcast squad is one of the only women-led broadcaster groups in the WNBA. And the organization embodies what it means to uplift women in sports. Come out to a game an experience all these great women in action at a Mystics game.
