The FIBA World Cup has begun, tune in to watch a few of our Mystics help Team USA dominate on the court!

Mystics on Team USA!

During this World Cup, two Mystics will play in Australia, representing the USA. Shakira Austin and Ariel Atkins have officially been named to the USA FIBA World Cup Team.

They will be joined and coached by our very own Coach Mike Thibault, as he was named Assistant Coach for Team USA.

Shakira Austin is the youngest player on the roster and this is her first time representing the USA on a professional level.

Ariel Atkins has played for Team USA previously and was part of the Gold Medal winning squad at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games!

Game 1 vs. Belgium Recap

Our Mystics helped secure Team USA’s first win in the 2022 FIBA World Cup. 

Atkins scored the first points in the game for Team USA with a turnaround jumper. She ended the game with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists. Shakira finished the game with 4 points, 4 rebounds, and went 2-2 from the free throw line in her debut World Cup game.

Game 2 vs. Puerto Rico Recap

Our Mystics helped secure Team USA’s second win in the 2022 FIBA World Cup. 

Shakira Austin represented the Mystics well in this game by dominating on all sides of the floor. She scored the most points on Team USA, with 19 points. She paired those 19 points with 10 rebounds and locked up her first double of the FIBA World Cup.

Game 3 vs. China Recap

Team USA fought hard to get a win against China in their third game in the 2022 FIBA World Cup. 

The team went 93.3% from the free throw line and 36.8 % from the three-point line. The team was able to come together well in a victory in their third match-up of the World Cup series.

Game 4 vs. Korea Recap

Our Mystics helped to make history with Team USA in the game against Korea, scoring a total of 145 points, the most by any other team in Team USA history.

Atkins made sure to put her teammates in a good position, dishing 2 assists and grabbing 3 steals. After sitting out against China, Austin went 6-8 from the field and finished this game with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks to help Team USA capture their 4th win.

Game 5 vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina Recap

Team USA secured a big win over their 5th opponent in the 2022 FIBA World Cup. 

Ariel Atkins was essential to the team’s ability to share the ball. She dished out 5 assists and had 3 steals to finish the game. In terms of scoring, Shakira Austin scored 15 points with a 77.8% from the field. Our Mystics were able to help Team USA on all ends of the floor.

Game 6 Quarter Finals vs. Serbia Recap

Team USA is moving on to the Semi-Finals of the 2022 FIBA World Cup after getting a win against Serbia in the Quarter Finals. 

Ariel Atkins helped Team USA secure the victory in the Quarter Finals by scoring 7 points and recording 1 block. Shakira Austin did her work on board and grabbed 3 rebounds in this match-up.

Game 7 Semi-Finals vs. Canada Recap

Atkins, Austin, and Team USA are heading to the Finals of the FIBA World Cup, after clinching a win against Canada in the Semi-Finals.

Ariel Atkins brought in 6 points for Team USA, adding on to their dominant win. Shakira Austin added to the Team’s success with 5 rebounds.
