The Washington Mystics and the WNBA have partnered to host a #BeYou Empowerment panel discussion at Capital One Arena prior to the Mystics game against the Los Angeles Sparks. The #BeYou Empowerment Series was created by the WNBA with a focus on reaching girls ages 13-17. The program will take place in various WNBA cities with Washington’s event taking place on Friday, Aug. 17 at 4 p.m., followed by Mystics versus Sparks at 7 p.m. Ticket packages for the #BeYou Empowerment event start at $25 and are available by clicking here, or by calling 877.DC.HOOP.1.
Scheduled to appear are journalist Jemele Hill from ESPN’s The Undefeated, Hill was recently honored as Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists. She will be joined by Susan McPherson, founder and CEO of McPherson Strategies. In addition to regular contributions to the Harvard Business Review, Triple Pundit and Forbes, McPherson hosts a bi-weekly #CSRChat on Twitter. Candice Cook who is a writer, philanthropist and managing partner of the Cook Law Firm, PLLC will also take part in the discussion. Cook was recognized as the Barrier Breaker award recipient for her commitment to philanthropy and the field of law. Rounding out the panel will be model Damaris Lewis. She has been featured in campaigns for MAC, L’Oreal, and Yves Saint Laurent as well as appeared in publications such as Essence Magazine, SELF Magazine and Cosmopolitan to name a few. Serving as the panel’s moderator will be Mystics broadcaster Christy Winters-Scott who is a basketball color analyst for various networks including ESPN, FSN, The Big Ten Network and NBC Sports Washington.
